It was early in the morning, and everyone was asleep except for little Mays. He had gotten up and gone into the kitchen, and that's when he saw the smoke. The house didn't have any smoke alarms. Mays' father couldn't afford them; he'd not worked since his accident. Mays was only eight, but he'd been taught at home and in school to report to adults when anything was wrong. "Daddy! Mommy! The kitchen is on fire! It's burning!"

Ronald Destra is a children book author, illustrator, publisher, entrepreneur and husband who resides in Florida.
